12-02-18 Advent – Change- Waiting on God

Change: Waiting on God

In the first chapter of the Gospel According to Luke, the births of both John the Baptist and Jesus are foretold and tied into the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. God’s people had waited many years. What can Parkway learn in a transitional period of waiting?

Waiting Lasts for an Unknown Time

Zechariah and Elizabeth waiting to conceive

God’s people waiting for the Messiah

We wait for Christ to return (Titus 2:13)

We might not know the results of any waiting in our lifetime

The Lord’s timing is perfect and purposeful (2 Peter 3:9)

Waiting Can Be Hard

Zechariah and Elizabeth dying to the hope of having children

God’s people captives to Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia and Rome

Waiting Refines Faith in Christ

Tests our faithfulness (1 Peter 1:6-7)

Builds our trust (1 Peter 1:8-9)

Gives us a bigger and God-focused picture (Romans 8:18-21)

Trains us to be more patient (Romans 8:25)

Helps us to sort out priorities (Psalm 90:12-14)

Waiting Displays Hope in God

Creates anticipation and readiness (Galatians 5:5)

Relies on the promises and faithfulness of God (2 Peter 1:3-4)
