The Word Became Flesh
John 1:14-18
John began the gospel with the amazing assertion that the Word (Jesus) was with God in the beginning and is God. He continues to describe the uniqueness of Jesus and also lays out the basics of the good news that through faith in Jesus we receive the right to become children of God. Now John continues to reveal an extraordinary view of Jesus.
The Paradox of Jesus’ Nature
“And the Word became flesh”
His choice
Fully God and fully human
The Amazement of Jesus’ Presence
“and dwelt among us”
Dwelt – tent/tabernacle – presence of God
In the midst of people who reject him
Fully identify with us
Fully participate in our lives
The Beauty of Jesus’ Glory
“and we have seen his glory”
Only Son of the Father
Full of grace
Full of truth
From his fullness comes overflow
We received grace upon grace
The Wonder of Jesus’ Revelation
“he (Jesus) has made him (the Father) known”
To see Jesus is to see the Father (John 14:6-11)
Limited view through Moses (Exodus 33:12-23)
Full view from the Father’s side (bosom)
The only God = Jesus – makes known the Father
